Soon, American gamers can play as a U.S. president defending democracy in a giant robot

Often, many of the more eccentric video games made in Japan never see the light of day in the U.S.

Some of the more-well-known examples are Pepsiman, a game where you play as a Pepsi-logo-emblazoned hero who saves the day by making last-minute soda deliveries, and LSD: Dream Emulator, a game that's exactly what it sounds like.

One of the oddities that never made it stateside was Metal Wolf Chaos, a game released for the Xbox in Japan in 2004.

The game starred fictional U.S. President Michael Wilson, who pilots a giant robot to fight off a coup attempt from traitorous Vice President Richard Hawk.

In the game, players traveled around the country in Air Force One, and battled in iconic landmarks across the States, including the Grand Canyon, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the front steps of the White House.

All the environments were all highly destructible, in case you mistakenly believed there was any reverence on display. It's all about the kind of absurd over-the-top action that has become synonymous with American games and cinema.

The campy style and over-the-top patriotism on display captured the imagination of many gamers in the U.S., and that was the intent of the developers, who described the style as "America as perceived by the Japanese."

There were even plans to release the game in the U.S., and a demo of the game was even released with the Official Xbox Magazine - though it was entirely in Japanese and hidden on the demo disk behind a secret code that players had to enter.

However, for reasons that were never made entirely clear, the U.S. release never came.

But now, 15 years after the original release, publisher Devolver Digital has slapped a new coat of paint on the oddball action game and will be releasing it to awaiting American fans as Metal Wolf Chaos XD on Tuesday, August 6.

The game will be available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC, featuring HD graphics and specialized skins for those who pre-order.
